Yakima EXO System Review

Top Photo PC: Hayley Haws

The Yakima EXO System is a modular storage system that attaches directly to your hitch and provides many options for storing and transporting gear. I’ve been using the EXO System for a few months now so I’ve got a good feel for what works (basically everything) and what doesn’t. The EXO system was gifted by Yakima but other than that I wasn’t compensated for my review.

In my gear reviews I share the perspective that I have living with a disability. My husband who does not have a disability also gives his take on the gear. I want to share both because I’m all about inclusivity and sharing different perspectives.

The EXO System that I’ve been using includes the SwingBase, GearLocker, and SnowBank. I’ve used these all winter and I’ll continue to use the base and storage box for our spring and summer adventures. Keep an eye on my Instagram for pictures and videos of the system in action.

Amanda’s Review

Pros:

  • The first pro of the EXO System is that it allows me to be much more independent. It’s an accessible way for me to store more gear for our adventures and I’m able to use it without asking for help. We have a top carrier that we bought last spring but only my husband is able to get up to put gear in and take it out.

  • It allows me to free up space in the back of our Subaru so that I can sit and get my layers on for whatever adventure I’m going on, whether that be skiing, sledding, or going for a hike. It also allows me to keep my daughter safe in the back while we get her ready as well. It also allows us to pack much of our gear in the box so that we can fit my wheelchair in the back of the Subaru. I’m not in a wheelchair full time but I do use it on long trips to save my strength and to prevent falls. It’s usually a tight squeeze with all of our gear and a carseat AND the wheelchair, but now it’s not an issue since we have the EXO System.

  • The GearLocker is quite spacious. It might not be as tall as our rooftop carrier but we’ve been able to fit just as much gear in it. I’ve left sleds in there most of the winter since I didn’t have to take up room in the car.

  • I love how the rack can swing out so that you can use the top rack and the box at the same time. Since the rack is right over the box if you want to get into the box you do have to swing it around but I think it’s super handy. Yakima also has a tabletop called the BackDeck that fits nicely on the top rack, but I haven’t tried it out yet.

  • The swing base has a large screw that goes through each bar of the base to secure it when driving. It has a nice big handle and I don’t struggle much at all tightening or loosening it.

Cons:

  • The system does add a fair bit of length to your vehicle so I’m bummed that I can’t fit in the garage with it on. I also couldn’t fit with the top carrier on so it’s a small trade off.

  • With just the GearLocker on I can still see through my backup camera. However, once you add on the top shelf it almost completely obscures your view so you have to rely on good old fashioned mirrors.

TAYLOR’S BRUTALLY HONEST REVIEW

I’d agree with Amanda with just about all of her pros and cons. The EXO system has been a really nice addition to our Outback. It was fairly simple to install, but a bit heavy for one person to do on their own. Doable, just slightly heavy. Each part of the system includes its own separate key which helps keep your gear more secure. Also, you can install locks (also included) in some parts of the system as well. With the top rack installed I do find it slightly annoying because you have to unscrew a screw and turn the whole top rack 180 degrees around in order to open up the GearLocker. Also, you have to extend the base arm in order to access your rear cargo hatch. Other than those minor inconveniences I’d give it a 9/10. It’s a solid system, easy to use, and definitely makes things more accessible for Amanda.

Pros:

  • Very user friendly once installed. It’s easy to learn what needs to be unscrewed or unlocked to access things

  • Solid. I know I mentioned it before but it just doesn’t feel cheap at all

  • The modularity is very nice. You can have one box, two boxes, a box and a ski rack (which is what we currently run), a box and tabletop, there are just so many ways to customize it.

  • Security. Having individual keys can be slightly annoying but it means that if one key is stolen the whole system isn’t compromised.

Cons:

  • As mentioned above, it’s a little annoying having to unscrew the system and swing the arm out every time you need to get into the back hatch. I’ve mostly noticed it when we’re driving around the National Parks and stopping every so often. It’s a minor thing, but it’s about the only con I can think of.
